Weekend visit
Two days exploring Snowdon and its surroundings — a summit ascent on day one, followed by history, legend, and landscape on day two.
Saturday
Day one — Yr Wyddfa
Early start from Llanberis. Begin the Llanberis Path before 8am to avoid the main morning rush and secure good summit light.
Llanberis Path ascent. Pace yourself — allow the mountain to come to you. The Halfway House café provides a mid-ascent break in season.
Summit. Hafod Eryri for a hot drink and the view. Look out over Llanberis Pass and — on clear days — to Ireland, Pembrokeshire, and the Lleyn Peninsula.
Begin descent. Consider descending via the Snowdon Ranger Path (different scenery westward to Llyn Cwellyn) if you have arranged a Sherpa bus or car pickup at the Snowdon Ranger trailhead. Otherwise, return via the Llanberis Path.
Back in Llanberis. Rest, shower, and a proper meal. Pete's Eats or any of the village cafés — verify current café operations before recommending specific names. Your legs have earned it.
Llanberis village in the evening has a modest but genuine pub and restaurant scene. The Royal Victoria Hotel bar or a local pub. Early night recommended before day two.
Sunday
Day two — History and landscape
National Slate Museum, Llanberis. Free admission (verify current policy). One of Wales's finest industrial heritage sites — the Dinorwic quarry story, working demonstrations, and the context of the landscape you walked through yesterday.
Llyn Padarn lakeshore walk in Padarn Country Park. Easy walking on the shore of the lake, with Yr Wyddfa above and the Dinorwic quarry terraces visible on the opposite hillside. The classic Lonely Tree viewpoint is on this walk.
Drive or take the Sherpa S4 to Beddgelert (approximately 30 minutes from Llanberis — verify current timetable). Lunch in the village — several cafés and tearooms on the river bank.
Gelert's Grave — a short walk from the village centre. Then follow the riverside path towards Aberglaslyn Pass: a dramatic gorge walk of approximately 3 km through the Glaslyn gorge, following the Welsh Highland Railway.
Optional: Sygun Copper Mine near Beddgelert for a guided underground tour. Or simply explore the village before the drive back.
Return to Llanberis or drive home. Consider stopping at the Electric Mountain visitor centre near Llanberis if time permits — guided tours run on a timed basis (verify current schedule before visiting).
Variants and alternatives
Based in Beddgelert: Swap the accommodation to Beddgelert and reverse the itinerary — explore Beddgelert and Nant Gwynant on day one, then take the Sherpa S4 to Pen y Pass for a Pyg Track ascent on day two. The Watkin Path starts 4 km north of Beddgelert for an alternative summit day.
Caernarfon base: Caernarfon offers the most urban comfort. Take the Welsh Highland Railway to Rhyd Ddu on day one for the quietest route, and add the castle and walled town on day two.
Railway-focused weekend: Snowdon Mountain Railway on day one (book well in advance). Welsh Highland Railway from Caernarfon to Porthmadog via Rhyd Ddu on day two — one of the finest narrow-gauge railway journeys in Britain through the heart of Snowdonia.
