Our purpose

Visit Snowdon exists to provide accurate, practical, and trustworthy visitor information about Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). We aim to be the kind of resource that a visitor would confidently rely on when planning a real trip — not a promotional site, not a thin aggregator of generic content, and not a repository of unverified claims.

That requires holding ourselves to editorial standards equivalent to those of serious destination journalism and official park information. This page explains how we do that.

Source hierarchy

All factual content on this site is sourced against a clear hierarchy, with higher-tier sources always preferred:

1. Official National Park, land management, transport, railway, weather, and mountain safety sources — Eryri National Park Authority, Natural Resources Wales, Snowdon Mountain Railway, MWIS, Met Office mountain forecasts, and Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team.
2. Official local authority, official tourism, and official transport operator sources — Visit Wales, Transport for Wales, Traveline Cymru, Gwynedd Council.
3. Established mapping, mountain, and safety authorities — Ordnance Survey, the British Mountaineering Council, Mountain Rescue England and Wales.
4. Reputable local historical, cultural, and heritage sources — the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, Cadw, heritage bodies.
5. Carefully selected supplementary travel and walking sources — only where appropriate and cross-referenced against higher-tier sources.

Where sources conflict, we state the uncertainty rather than selecting the more convenient figure. We do not invent specifics and do not assume precision where variation exists.

Content classification

All content on this site is classified into one of three publication tiers, which determines how frequently it is reviewed and how volatile information within it is handled.

Evergreen content covers stable factual information unlikely to change: geological history, mythology, species descriptions, established historical facts, and permanent physical features of the mountain. This content is reviewed periodically but does not require annual verification.

Periodic-review content covers practical guidance that is broadly stable but can change: route terrain descriptions, safety guidance, general transport options, facility types, and seasonal patterns. This content is reviewed at least once or twice per year.

Manual-verification-required content covers operational details that change frequently and must be verified from official sources before publication or after any significant time has elapsed: parking charges, railway ticket prices, Sherpa fares, operating seasons, timetables, booking platforms, and capacity figures. This content is flagged throughout the site with a visible indicator and is always linked to its official source.

Handling variable and volatile information

A core principle of this site is that we do not bake volatile operational details into evergreen article copy as though they were timeless facts. Parking charges, timetables, ticket prices, seasonal opening dates, and operating schedules are all prominently marked as variable information throughout the site, and are always linked directly to the official source rather than stated as settled figures.

Where route durations, difficulty, or suitability vary significantly by person, conditions, or source, we present them as careful estimates with explanatory notes. We do not assert that a route takes “exactly five hours” when the reality is “between four and seven hours depending on fitness and conditions.”

Readers who see a “verify” badge or a variable information callout on this site should take that as a genuine instruction: the figure or detail cited was accurate when reviewed but may have changed, and the official source linked is the correct place to check current information before acting on it.

Safety and route guidance

We take our responsibility for safety content seriously. We do not write unsafe hiking copy, do not encourage walkers to underestimate the mountain, and do not soften safety warnings for the sake of an optimistic tone. We reflect the actual assessment of Eryri National Park Authority and mountain safety bodies.

Route difficulty ratings and safety warnings on this site are derived from official NPA grading and from Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team guidance. We do not downgrade difficulty to make routes appear more accessible than they are.

Naming — Snowdon and Yr Wyddfa

Both names are used throughout this site, respecting the November 2022 decision of Eryri National Park Authority to adopt Yr Wyddfa as the primary Welsh-language name. We lead with Yr Wyddfa in official contexts and use Snowdon where it aids clarity for an English-speaking audience, particularly in search-facing titles and descriptions. The naming strategy is consistent throughout the site and both names are treated with equal respect.

If you find an error, an out-of-date figure, or a broken official source link on this site, please contact us. We are committed to correcting factual errors promptly and transparently. All pages carry a “last reviewed” date and a publication tier indicator so readers understand the recency and nature of the information they are reading.
